 Creeping Charlie/Pilea nummularifolia Plants Description:

  • Commonly known as Creeping Charlie, Pilea nummularifolia is a perennial evergreen herbaceous plant.
  • Native to the Caribbean and northern South America, Creeping Pilea has small, crinkly foliage that add a pretty flair to tropical gardens and houseplant collections.
  • Belong to Urticaceae family, Creeping Charlie has bright glossy green, round to oval leaves that are deeply wrinkled with notched tips.
  • Creeping Charlie is a creeping groundcover perennial plant that will burn under intense sun or be more sparse under shade.

Pilea nummularifolia (big leaves) or Creeping Charlie Plant Care

  • This fast-growing species grows best in bright, indirect light, but should not be placed into direct sunlight, which can scorch its leaves.
  • It needs the good soil mixture that includes compost mixture, leaf mold (decomposed leaf compost) and coarse sand in equal parts.
  • Since Creeping Charlie is a tropical plant, it prefers average to warm room temperatures 65 degrees Fahrenheit (ca. 18 °C) — 80 degrees Fahrenheit (ca. 27 °C). 
  • Creeping Charlie require moderate watering in spring and summers and less in winters.
  • The Plant require well drained yet moisture retaining soils.
  • The soil moisture should always be monitored to check the hydration levels, at all times.

Creeping Charlie Special Features:

  • It can be planted in small pots, raised bed or hanging baskets.
  • Excellent ground cover for areas such as banks, woodland gardens, along paths, water gardens or along streams, pools, or ponds. 
  • It is also suitable to cover or spill over stone walls.
  • Both charming and sprawling, creeping Charlie is used for ornamental purpose.
  • Its leaves are edible and can be used in teas.
