Have you ever been told your balcony is “east-facing” or “west-facing” and wondered what that actually means?
If you're choosing plants, knowing your balcony direction is a useful starting point because it gives you an idea of when your space may receive sunlight.
And you don't need to know much about geography to find it.
The easiest way is to stand on your balcony, face outwards and check your phone's compass. The direction shown is the direction your balcony faces.
But there is one important thing to remember: direction tells you where your balcony faces. It does not tell you exactly how much sunlight your plants receive.
How to check your balcony direction
You can do this in less than a minute.
- Stand on your balcony.
- Face towards the open side, where the balcony looks out.
- Open the compass on your phone.
- Check whether it shows N, E, S or W.
If the reading falls between two directions, your balcony may be north-east, south-east, south-west or another combination.
You don't need the exact degree for most gardening decisions.
One common mistake
Don't stand inside your home facing the balcony door.
The direction you need is the direction the balcony opens towards.
What does balcony direction mean for plants?
The direction gives you a rough idea of the sunlight pattern.
East-facing balconies generally receive morning sunlight.
West-facing balconies generally receive stronger afternoon sunlight.
North-facing balconies often receive less direct sunlight.
South-facing balconies can receive longer periods of direct sunlight, depending on your location and surroundings.
But these are only general patterns.
A nearby building, tree, wall, overhead slab or another balcony can change the actual light reaching your plants.
That's why we don't recommend choosing plants based on direction alone.
Direction is only the starting point
In practice, the same balcony direction can produce very different growing conditions.
For example, two west-facing balconies in the same building may not receive the same amount of afternoon sun. One could be completely open, while another may be shaded by a neighbouring building.
This is something worth checking before choosing plants.

Your balcony's actual light conditions are more useful than its label.
Can you use the Sun to find the direction?
You can use the Sun as a rough guide.
The Sun generally rises towards the east and sets towards the west. So a balcony that receives morning sunlight may face towards the east, while one receiving strong afternoon sunlight may face towards the west.
But don't rely on this method alone.
The Sun's position changes through the year, and nearby buildings or trees can block it.
For a more reliable answer, use your phone's compass and then check how much sunlight your balcony actually receives.
What if your balcony faces between two directions?
That's completely normal.
You might have a:
- North-east facing balcony
- South-east facing balcony
- North-west facing balcony
- South-west facing balcony
In these cases, look at both the direction and the actual sunlight.
For example, a north-east balcony may receive useful morning light, while a south-west balcony may receive stronger afternoon sun.
You don't need to force your balcony into one simple category.
What if your balcony direction and sunlight don't seem to match?
That's possible.
Your phone might show that your balcony faces west, but a nearby building could block most of the afternoon sunlight.
Or your balcony might face east but have an overhead slab that limits the morning sun.
This is why four things are more useful together:
Direction + sunlight + timing + shade
Before choosing plants, check:
- How many hours of direct sunlight you receive
- Whether it is morning or afternoon sunlight
- Which areas stay shaded
- What blocks the sunlight

Think of your balcony in light zones
You may also find that different parts of the same balcony receive different amounts of light.
For example:
Sunny zone: Several hours of direct sunlight.
Partly sunny zone: Some direct sun followed by shade.
Bright shade: Bright surroundings with little or no direct sunlight.
This is useful because you don't have to choose plants for the balcony as a whole.
You can choose them based on where they will actually sit.
That approach is often much more practical than looking for one list of “best balcony plants”.
A simple check before buying plants
Once you've identified your balcony direction, note these four things:
Direction: East, west, north or south?
Sunlight: How many hours of direct sun?
Timing: Morning, midday or afternoon?
Shade: What blocks the light?
Then match your plants to those conditions.

Then observe the sunlight.
