Calendula (Calendula officinalis), also known as Pot Marigold—is a beautiful and useful flower that’s easy to grow in India. Its bright, daisy-like flowers that come in shades of orange, yellow, and gold, Calendula is perfect for garden beds, borders, and containers. Here’s a complete guide to growing Calendula from seeds in India:

    Best Time to Grow Calendula

    • September to November
    • Grows best in cooler months (winter)

    Soil and Location

    • Sunlight: Needs 4-6 hours of full sun daily for best flowering.
    • Soil Type: Well-draining, loose soil mixed with compost and cocopeat.
    • Pots or Ground: Can be grown in pots with 8-10 inches diameter.
    • Ideal for gardens, balconies, pots, or raised beds

    Sowing the Seeds

    • Fill pot with your prepared soil mix.
    • Moisten the soil before sowing.
    • Sprinkle seeds on top or sow about ½ inch deep.
    • Cover lightly with soil and mist water to settle.
    • Place pot in bright indirect sun until seeds germinate.
    • Maintain moisture using a spray bottle—don't let soil dry out.

    Germination & Seedling Care

    • Germination Time: 7-10 days
    • Move pot to full sun after germination. Needs 4–6 hours of direct sun daily for best blooming.
    • Watering: Water every 2-3 days or when the topsoil feels dry. Avoid overwatering.

    Growth & Flowering

    • Fertilization: Use compost or mild liquid fertilizer every 2–3 weeks
    • Pinching: Pinch growing tips when young to encourage bushy growth.
    • Deadheading: Remove faded flowers to promote more blooms

    Pest & Disease Prevention

    • Common Issues: Aphids and Powdery mildew
    • Solution: Use neem oil spray and avoid overhead watering to prevent diseases.

    Blooming & Maintenance

    • Flowering Time: Start flowering in 6-8 weeks after sowing.
    • Bloom Duration: Blooms through Nov to Feb/March in most of India
