Bittergourd Parbhani Kranti is a high-yielding and disease-resistant variety. It is known for its medium-sized dark green fruits with spines, early maturity, and resistance to Yellow Vein Mosaic Virus (YVMV). Here’s how you can successfully cultivate them:
Climate & Season
- Ideal Temperature: 25–35°C. Needs 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
- Bitter gourd Parbhani Kranti can be grown in pots, throughout the year in warm climates.
- Best Sowing Time:
- Summer Crop: January–March
- Monsoon Crop: June–July
- Winter Crop: September–October
Soil Preparation
- Prefers well-drained, sandy loam or loamy soil with high organic matter. For growing in pot, use mixture of garden soil (40%), Compost (30%) and Cocopeat or Sand (30%) for good aeration.
Planting from Seed
- Sow seeds 1.5-2 cm deep with a spacing of 45-60 cm between plants and 1.5-2 meters between rows. Germination takes 6–10 days.
- To grow bitter gourd in pot, use 15–20 inches deep pot or grow bag with drainage holes. Sow 2–3 seeds per pot, 1.5 cm deep. Germination takes 6–10 days. After germination, thin out weaker seedlings, keeping the healthiest one.
Watering
- Water immediately after sowing. Water every 2–3 days or when the topsoil feels dry. Avoid waterlogging, as it can cause root rot.
Fertilization & Nutrient Management
- Organic manure (vermicompost/cow dung) – Apply every 15 days.
- Balance NPK Fertilizer – Apply once a month.
- Neem cake fertilizer can enhance fruiting naturally.
Training & Trellis Support
- Use staking or a trellis system (vertical netting or bamboo poles) for better plant growth and higher yields. Training plants on a trellis improves air circulation and reduces pest attacks.
Pest & Disease Management
Common Pests:
- Fruit Fly & Aphids – Spray neem oil every 7–10 days.
- Whiteflies & Spider Mites – Use insecticidal soap or sticky traps
Common Diseases:
- Yellow Vein Mosaic Virus (YVMV): Parbhani Kranti is resistant.
- Powdery Mildew: Spray sulfur-based fungicides.
- Downy Mildew: Use copper fungicides.
Harvesting
- First harvest in 55–60 days after sowing.
- Pick fruits when they are tender, green, and about 4–6 inches long.
- Harvest every 2–3 days to encourage continuous fruiting.
