Growing Gawar (Cluster Beans) Selection-51 from seeds in containers is absolutely doable—and a great way to get fresh, tender pods at home! Selection-51 is known for high yield, better pod quality, and adaptability to Indian climates. Here’s a complete guide:

Container

  • Depth: Minimum 12–15 inches deep

  • Width: At least 12–16 inches (or grow in a rectangular tub for more plants)

  • Must have drainage holes

Potting Mix

Gawar prefers light, well-draining soil. Use:

  • 40% garden soil

  • 30% compost/vermicompost

  • 30% sand or cocopeat (to improve drainage)

You can also add a little neem cake for root health and pest resistance.

Best Time to Sow

  • Ideal seasons:

    • Summer crop: February–April

    • Kharif crop (monsoon): June–August

  • Loves warm weather (25–35°C)

Sowing the Seeds

  • Sow seeds 1 inch deep, spaced 4–6 inches apart.

  • In a large container, sow 3–5 seeds depending on space.

Sunlight

  • Needs full sunlight – at least 6–8 hours per day

  • Place on a sunny terrace, balcony, or veranda

Watering

  • Keep soil moist but not soggy

  • Water once daily in summer, less during cooler/rainy days

  • Don’t let water collect—gawar roots hate being waterlogged

Support (Optional)

  • Gawar is semi-erect; for taller growth, add small sticks or trellis

  • Not strictly necessary, but helps keep pods clean and easy to harvest

Fertilizing

  • Add vermicompost or cow dung every 2 weeks

  • Optional: use a mild organic liquid fertilizer monthly

Harvesting

  • Harvest in 45–60 days after sowing

  • Pick young, tender pods regularly for best flavor and to encourage more yield

Pests & Care

  • Watch out for aphids or caterpillars

  • Spray neem oil (5 ml/liter water) weekly if needed

  • Keep air circulation good to avoid fungal issues
